This is my second batch and a little better than first batch. I cut the first batch with a hand grinder with a diamond blade and the second batch with a wet tile saw which was easier and less mess. Both methods provided intact halves. A hammer and chisel would have been the next choice. They are natural geodes so the seller has no way to know which are solid and which are hollow. That is part of the fun in cutting them open yourself. Otherwise pay more and buy geodes already cut open. The box cover may be a little misleading, but there are enough reviews with photos to make an informed choice.

Some break open pretty easily, while others were even hard for me to break open. If your child looses interest quickly it may not be a good set for you. But it was really cool to see the inside of them once we got them open. I don't remember the recommended age, but my son was 7 and determined. I gave him the eye protection, a hammer and a safe spot in the back yard and let him go at it. Kept him occupied for a long time!
