It holds anything whose handle is narrow enough, such as my whisk with flat handle, a long bladed spatula, a couple of long bread knives and my large chef's knive which was difficult to find a storage place for. It doesn't have a swivel base per se, but it turns easily by hand, but the broad round base means it doesn"t fall over. I was able to eliminate two utensil holders by using this item, saving me some counter space, and keeping my most-used utensils within easy reach.

This has dedicated slots with lots of room for even your longest knives.My sharpening/honing steel fits in a dedicated slot and there is also one for scissors (that I don't use).This sure did the trick for me.

   LOVING the knife block. It is made with rigid plastic and the handle of the knife holds it in place at the top of the block. We were able to move all the knives from our wooden knife block (6 steak knives, a sharpener, scissors, 6 "standard" knives) to the new knife block PLUS a large chef knife, cleaver, and 3 or 4 more knives from a drawer and there is still room to fit another knife or two. Takes less table-top space then our wooden knife block. Wish I had taken a photo - LOVE it and highly recommend it. Really like that is has a designated spot for both the sharpener and the scissors.
