It cleaned up two filthy, greasy chains with relative ease, (I ran it twice and had been using petroleum-based lubes) so I could switch to a quality dry lube. If it helps keep the chains cleaner and extend the life of the drive trains, it's worth it.

It was finicky, messier, generally harder to use. This one has a sturdy handle that's reversible so you can use it in either direction and the sponge really does cut down on the mess. The clips lock it together much better. Overall, it's worth the few extra dollars.
