The thick wood dowels are able to flip up and remain in a more flush position to wall when not in use. When needed as a hook, move 1 of 5 dowels down to hold your stuff. It took me maybe 5 minutes to install. I used metal wall anchors and drywall screws. The back has a thin piece of soft rubber padding to protect it and your wall.
