The tracks connect simply enough, but they're not likely to stay together if accidentally nudged or kicked. And you can make a circle or an oval, so not a lot of optional layouts. But for the price of a toy version of collector grade model trains intended for toddlers to young children, this is perfectly fine. It should last at least a few Christmases before my little one outgrows it.
