   Living in a building from 1920 I was insecure about mounting my window ac without a brace, due to the old wood and stucco building. One of the people I asked to put the ac in said I had to have a brace before installation. I had purchased this for a much larger ac (8,000 btu as opposed to the 5,000 btu I'm using my second one for), but the price differential was so slim (under $5) between this heavy duty brace and a much smaller one I saw at a big box store, I thought "why not just go with the better brace for a few dollars more". I'm glad I did, for piece of mind, especially since I live on the second floor. It's really quite sturdy.

   This mount is perfect for those who do not which to drill holes on the outside of their home, while it remains VERY durable and SAFE to use. It comes with everything you need, even easy to follow directions. Tools needed for installation include a drill (for pre-drilling screw holes, screws not self tapping), and Philips head screw driver (drill bit recommended using a power drill). Mount has a built in level as well, which simplifies adjustment before final installation.
   
   Thus far, it has held up to several severe storms, while supporting an 8,000 BTU AC unit (see other reviews). As the screws are large and heavy duty, I don't see them coming out on their own anytime soon (the window itself would have to fail first, I suspect). I usually tape screws to the mount when removed for the winter, to avoid losing them later. The mount comes with custom spacers as well, so tape the ones you used to the mount during storage as well.

   If you have ever used a window AC without a bracket like this you know how you constantly worry about the unit falling out the window whether while putting it in and adjusting it, or if someone opens the window after it it is installed. Many people comment on the "universal" claims being untrue though I found this to have more to do with the shape of the bottom of my AC units rather than with any product design. I did find that to get everything fitting tightly and properly angled I needed to use a piece of wood under the front of the AC on the window sill so it took a little effort, and the instructions take some experimentation to figure out but with patience I got an excellent result. I bought one heavy duty and one regular duty for 2 different AC's and found them both to be equally well made though it is worth noting that the heavy duty unit is a few inches longer and so sticks out beyond my 8,000 BTU unit farther than I would prefer for a good look.

   this bracket is strong and stable. the key to its success is finding the center of balance for your particular air conditioning unit. I laid a 2 x 4 on its side, and balanced the A/C unit on it. Mark the position with a pencil, transfer that mark to the window frame and you are ready to mount the bracket. the accessories that come with the bracket include three different sized spacers which can accommodate various thicknesses of window trim. (Using these spacers allows the AC unit to rest on the frame and not on the metal chassis of the AC.) Setting the angle of the diagonal brace can be somewhat tricky, the built in bubble level quickly eliminates the guesswork of which pre drilled hole you should use. the diagonal brace has a rubber footing to help it stay in place, but I would recommend locking the footing in place with at least one screw (two pre-drilled holes are supplied)

   Works great and for a variety of applications.
   I used it to support a 10000 BTU AC in an aluminum, horizontal sliding window opening.
   Instructions may not always apply, such as with the way I used it, but a little common sense should get you there.
   With my aluminum, sliding window I had to add a 4" long 2x4 block outside and just below the aluminum frame to have a place to screw it in.
   I pre-drilled the block so it wouldn't split and anchored it to the house with 4ea deck screws.
   Set the angle then placed two more deck screws under the brace foot.
   Worked Great! Nice and secure.
   I think most any DIY type person could easily make it work for most any window type.
