The amount of light is very mild so I don't think you could read by it unless you had it very close to a book. I feel it is more of a light that you can use that is very quick and easy to reach out and touch, again, like if you had to get up in the middle of the night and you didn't want to turn on the rest of your lighting. I liked it so much I got my 88 year old mom one to put in her bedroom. I would buy again

I absolutely love this little lamp. I keep it on my small end table. Rather then turning on a lamp or overhead lighting this is perfect to read with while others are watching tv. When I go to bed I just carry it with me rather then using a flash light or turning on lights that might bother others while they are sleeping. It is really better then many flash lights and much nicer to hold. The batteries haven't died yet and I use it every night for at least 1 hour. I have had it for will over 30 days.
