There is a beginners manual which the manufacturer thoughtfully included and as a result, is helping my grandson to provide a wonderful challenge as well as keeping him away from video games.    Every year at Christmas time, I take as many mittens from the giving trees for kids in need that indicate that the child wants a game. I ordered as many of these chess sets as I had mittens and gifted the children with it and with the Child's Book of Chess as well so they can read and teach themselves. Obviously they have to be able to read, so usually the age range is about 8-15. I always hope they will find someone who will play with them. These sets are very nicely made and sturdy.

   This chess set is not a deluxe, tournament chess set. However, for the price, it is a a good solid product for a very good value. The pieces are unweighted wood, with felt bottom. The board I received was perfectly aligned when open, and there were no blemishes on the wood. I bought this set for my 11 year old and purchased a set of wooden checkers separately as she wants to learn both games. This set fired her imagination and has her interested in playing more, in a way that playing on a screen never could. The company has excellent customer service. Upon purchase they spontaneously emailed a beginner's book on rules and strategy and have a standing offer to replace lost pieces. I am very happy with my purchase.

   I have purchased this set for several reasons. I like wood, not plastic. My 10 year old grandson is just learning the game and I wanted to get him a nice useable set that didn’t look like a toy. He’s taken a real interest in learning how to play, but is not very good about storing his things. I love that the box holds all the pieces so they will hopefully stay together. I think he will like it a lot.
