   This radio works really well through our repeaters here in town. Sound quality is really good. I purchased these since they have the FM radio and the flashlight comes in more handy than I thought it would. We have used these baofeng radios for years with our car club because because of the better distance. However, these are my first baofengs as I usually used my FRS as radios. Well after searching frequencies to program I realized I need a operators license to transmit due to the higher wattage. That's okay because it seems like an easy process and beneficial to my community during a crisis or disaster when other communication might be down!!! Best of all is the red and black color.

   Don't worry about it there's a jailbreak it takes about 30 seconds for this radio and others like it. I would post a link but I don't think it'll let me do that. Easy to find easier to fix. You can get all the stuff you want just like the old radios. P.S. If you have an old version of chirp keep it. Do not get an updated version. If it asks say no.

   I've been using UV-5R 's for many years. The 5R aren't the most good looking radio out there. The UV-S9, on the other hand, is quite a good looking radio. I use Chirp to program. Please visit the Chirp home page to cross reference radio in hand vs the program needed. In this case I used the BF-F8HP option as directed on chart. Programmed up without issue.

   In a good way! This is essentially a UV-5R with a swanky new shell and a bit more wattage. First off it's unlocked from 138-173MHz and 400-520MHz, transceiving through the whole range. You can LISTEN ONLY (wink wink) to FRS, GMRS, MURS, VHF Marine, NOAA Weather and of course talk on the Ham Bands (properly licensed of course;). It also listens to broadcast FM radio and has a flashlight that's not totally useless! The battery now charges via an included USB cable in addition to the charging cradle (also included). The speaker is loud and clear, the earpiece sucks and the included antenna is very adequate. Fully field programmable once you learn. All in all it's the cheap, capable Baofeng you know and love with a few perks and a new coat of paint! Get it!!

   This is the second of these UV-S9 Plus radios I've purchased and I have nothing but good to say about them. They transmit about 7-8 watts on high range and everyone reports to me that I sound good and clear. I've been very pleased with the features and the ability to open repeaters near me. I did replace the antenna with a 19" Dual Band Signal Stick from Hamstudy.org. It's a great antenna for this radio. I own 7 Baofeng radios and have been pleased with all but one that has a small transmit button issue.
