I was afraid of getting a typical rattle because he may smack himself in the head with it. These have the very soft, pillow-like ball on one end that won't hurt if he hits his face with it. It has a rattle on the other end that is quite thick and may or may not be used for teething. It's not a loud annoying rattle either, it's a softer sound because of the thick plastic and larger balls inside. I'd definitely recommend this to parents with a very young baby.
